Geographic information is an essential component of the effectivement management of agricultural and forestry-related issues. The produced data and their integration in "trade" applications aims to assist political leaders or sector professionals in the decision making process. For example, the data help to identify in detail agricultural and forestry areas, to monitor land occupation evolutions or to determine the type of crops or forests.

Involved in sustainable development issues, IGN France International offers its services to actors in the agriculture and forestry fields, for producing geographic data, providing GIS, trade information systems and decision support tools, or for completing project management assistance.

Burkina Faso • Land occupation database

Egypt • Monitoring and assessment of urban pressure on agricultural lands

This project was entirely completed in Burkina Faso using two satellite image coverages. These two land occupation databases and the database containing the changes between the two others, make up a fundamental source of information for the implementation of biophysical accounts, monitoring of the diachronic analysis of the land occupation changes that occured during the decade.

This project is the fruit of close collaboration between the IGN France International experts and the expert statisticians of the French Ministry of Agriculture. It allowed the creation and execution of a statistical methodology for monitoring the urban extension on agricultural land and the extension of agricultural land on the desert, over the enitre Nile valley and delta, over a period of 20 years between 1985 and 2005.

Central America & Caribbean • Hydrological and environmental monitoring (SHERPA)

IGN France International set up a tool for the planning, management and control of the use of forestry resources in Karelia.
The tool was developed on a core GIS and supplied by various satellite data.

Since 1999, IGN France International has been trying to sensibilise Central American and Caribbean countries to the interest of the CORINE system. A feasibility study over the Rio Lempa basin was completed in order to better adapt the nomenclature to the regional specificities and to launch environmental applications based on this database. An extension of the database over the entire territory of El Salvador was also financed and completed following this project.
