Cartography/NSDI: cartographic databases and infrastructures

Printer-friendly versionSend to friend

Valuable tools for understanding territories, the concept of the map has greatly diversified taking the form of vector or raster geographic databases. The map's application to the general public has also exploded.
At a national level, a country's cartography is more often associated with a spatial data infrastructure (NSDI) procedure. This process completely redefines the production and distribution of cartographic data, which become independent and complementary layers of information.

IGN France International offers its clients support in achieving their cartographic projects, from the initial constitution all the way through updating, in particular in the phase where technology is transferred to their teams.

Senegal • Cartography at 1:200,000 over the country

Great Britain • Revision of the topographic database

This major project consisted of the creation of a cartographic coverage at a scale of 1:200,000 based on SPOT5 images and a field completion. Preliminary work focused on the refection of the geodetic network.
The Senegalese Direction of Geographic and Cartographic works (DTGC) and diverse experts from the IGN  were called upon to work alongside IGN France International.

From 2002 to 2007, IGN France International worked for the Ordnance Survey updating 10,000 to 15,000 km² of England's rural areas. This project was composed of several phases such as aerial photography at a scale of 1:7,500, stereopreparation, aerotriangulation, revision of DTMs, creation  of digital orthophotographs as a support tool for the revision of the database and finally, the revision of hte database for a continual update and improvement of the geometric accuracy of the data.

Luxembourg • Multi-scale cartography   Bangladesh • PMA* for cartographic revision

IGN France International successfully completed the mapping a 1:20,000 derived from a topological database created using photogrammetric surveys.
Generalised coverages (1:50,000, 1:100,000 et 1:250,000) were also completed over the entire country.

IGN France International was chosen by the Survey of Bangladesh to help them modernise their cartographic institue.  The complete services, including project management assistance, were spread out of several phases and included expert missions for the critical phases.
